  • JC Chasez

I'm about to sink any street cred I may have with the cool kids or as a classical music major (or as a straight guy for that matter), but I like Nsync.  I think they were incredibly talented and I still enjoy their music.

Now, when most people think of Nsync they think of Justin Timberlake, who has gone on to have a stellar solo career.  But the other lead tenor in the group was a man named JC Chasez who, in my estimation, is one of the more talented performers of all time.  He danced just as well as Justin and was an infinitely better singer.  Whenever there was a high sustained note to be taken, it was JC, not Justin, who handled it.  As Timberlake put it...

"...in my opinion, he had the best voice out of all of us.  Out of all the boy bands, call 'em what you will, he was the one that could out-sing all of us."

He is also, by all accounts, a very shy person.

Unfortunately, after Nsync split up and Timberlake made it big, JC's first attempt at a solo album was a flop imitation of Timberlake's style.  It was absent of JC's power and incredible range as a vocalist.  JC's second album, a pop opera called The Story of Kate, was supposed to be a return to his idiom, but it has never been released.  A few tracks have leaked though, and they're incredible.  This one is my favorite.

For all you music nerds out there, he's on a high B in that song (and could keep going up).  I'm an operatic baritone and I top at a high Bb.  That's insane, and it takes a tremendous amount of talent.

I love JC's passion as a singer.  He just seems to pour every inch of himself into the song, and I respect that.  I find it far more appealing than Timberlake's vacuous songs.  It's a downright travesty and an indictment on the taste of Americans that Justin Timberlake has garnered more acclaim than JC Chasez.

Alright, commence making fun of me now.

Oh, and there's still no god.

JC Chasez is the man.  He is the wind beneath Justin's wings.

It's okay, you're not a total pariah. There's a lot of vocal kids at my university who would like to sleep with JT, but learn from JC. I always thought he would have a really promising career in theatre. I always thought JC was too much of a sweetheart to be corrupted by a record company post-N*SYNC.

(And they were WAY better that the Backstreet Boys.)

@irishgrrl690 - He pretty much was too good.  Jive tried to dictate his performance style and he dropped 'em like a brick.  It's why Story of Kate remains unreleased.

    JT

While I'm personally a BSB fan, I love NSYNC too. I noticed by the time Celebrity rolled around, JT got all the spotlight...

High B and keep going?!? Wow. I'm a tenor, and the highest I ever got was a high A. Honestly, I have a special place outside my heart for boy bands.

    Oh, and you're incorrigible.

No doubt he's plenty talented. But, the song you posted still doesn't quite do it for me.

Cynic. They came out in 1993. No one, and I do mean no one sounded even remotely like them then. It's almost as if they dropped out of the sky.  Their influence has popped up in some bands such as Obscura, but for the most part, they're quite inimitable. Paul Masvidal (lead vocals/guitar/songwriter) is a genius. And no, I don't throw the word around too often.

Oh, and there's still no god.

Sounds like you think JC is God.

Tee hee. I hate to admit that I was a huge Nsync fan back in the day, but they were pretty talented.  That was back when people had to be talented to make it in the music business.

I am a huge JC fan, still listen to Nsync but have to agree that I'm Not Sleeping Alone isn't my favourite. Check out You Ruined Me, Better Than Love and a new song leaked recently Come on Over.

I really like JC's voice, he's an amazing singer one of the best male vocal I've ever heard. He deserve more success than he have right now.

i'm glad that there are people who realized this. i'm a NSYNC fan then until now and that is because of JC. If it wasn't for JC, Justin wouldn't be where he is. he wouldn't either be in the group. hope it's not too late for him.

  • soul4poetry

amen.  Thank you for this.  For such a long time the "nsync community" seemed to be the only ones that appreciated the true and raw talent that is JC Chasez.  He is truly underappreciated and misunderstood.  His music and his voice are something that cannot be matched on the radio these days.  This is why I stopped listening to all the crap that's on the radio these days.  We need true singers/songwriters that have actual talent and can sing without that damn autotune.  I only wish that JC could see and believe this as much as everyone here.

Come on Over is not JC

Great post. Where is the high B in the song? Also is this a higher note: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlqjsCs4t6g

Sorry, I don't know much about these things but I agree with everything you said about JC. He is fantastic.

Justin's second album, Future Love/ Sex Sounds, was an imitation of Chasez's style.

Other  than that what a nice post!

From the tracks off of "The Story of Kate" If JC could find someone to support him in the way he deserves I feel it would be HUGE!

Um, I agree with this wholeheartedly.  Clearly, I am biased as I always loved JC, but I never quite realized how spectacular his voice really is...and now we never hear it.  NSYNC's songs rarely showcased just what he was capable of, sadly.
